True Detective
Published in Mass Market Paperback by I Books (February, 2003)
Author: Max Allan Collins
Average review score:

A modern classic
Collin's novel is the ultimate re-examination of the 1930s private detective. It is full of drama, action, and deep historical context.

Should be required reading for the human race.

An excellent story sure to please mystery and history buffs
Rarely does one come across a book which so completely captures the essence of an era. Max Allan Collins has achieved this in spades. He is simply the master of the historical mystery novel. Nathan Heller is a well rounded character, and his interaction with some of the era's most notable figures is exceedingly well done. I can only the entire line of Nathan Heller novels get back into print. If you're a fan of Hammett, Chandler, etc, you're sure to love it.

Values: Lighting the Candle of Excellence: A Practical Guide for the Family
Published in Hardcover by Newstar Pr (December, 1996)
Author: Marva Collins
Average review score:

Short but powerful collection of essays
Having recently loved the book, MARVA COLLINS' WAY by
Marva Collins and Civia Tamarkin, I was naturally excited to
find something else authored by this inspirational woman . . . in case you're not familiar with the name, she started her own
school in Chicago and made a difference in the lives of her
students.

Her VALUES: LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF EXCELLENCE,
A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR THE FAMILY certainly did not
disappoint . . . it is a short but powerful collection of
essays about how all of us--not just teachers--can help to
raise good kids . . . get this valuable handbook if you're
a parent or grandparent, educator, or just plain interested
in helping children succeed in life.

Among the many memorable passages:
Think how many times a child will draw a picture and the
parent will say, "What is it?" The very words, "What is it?"
already say to your child, "Your picture is not very good
because I did not know what it was." Say instead, "What
a wonderful picture! Tell me about it."

How often do we begin to reprimand with the word Don't.
"Don't do this; don't do that." Try instead, "I think you are
making the wrong choice, bright one. Can you think of
a better choice?"

"Everybody hates me" is another statement used frequently
by the child who has learned to become a "victim." To this
question you might respond, "Everybody means everyone
in the whole world. This means people in China, Africa,
Switzerland, and places you have never visited, so how
could these people hate you?" Encourage your child to
conclude that not "everybody" hates him or her. Then say,
"Let's talk about the people you think hate you right now.
Can you think of anything that you may have done to
make you feel that these people hate you?"

A MUST for any family library!
This is a beatiful book carefully put together about a cherished topic...values within a famliy. It is a handbook for raising good kids. Our family atmosphere has changed since using such techniques as CAF (consider all factors), calling my children "My bright one", and standing firmly on the foundation of loving DISCIPLINE. You'd be crazy not to get this book!

The Western Guide to Feng Shui: Six-Tape Audio Program and Workbook
Published in Audio Cassette by Hay House, Inc. (August, 1997)
Author: Terah Kathryn Collins
Average review score:

Terah keeps it simple and easy to use
Terah's voice is very pleasing to listen to and she presents the concepts simply so one can immediately put the concepts to use in your home and office. I have done both -- with good effect. Her experience in working with hundreds of homes and offices is condensed into a very pleasant listening and learning experience. If you want to affirm in your physical world what you are already affirming and praying for in your mental world, then this is the program for you. I've listened to a lot of tape programs over the years and hers is among the best!

Western Guide to Feng Shui - 6 audio tape series
This tape series is the follow on to the original piece by the author. What an excellent way for readers to learn about Feng Shui - while driving the long commute home or at home. Terah Collins covers the basics in a clear, concise, and informative way. I finally understand the history behind this Eastern practice of building and maintaining harmonious and peaceful environmental surroundings. The workbook clearly compliments topics on tape. Especially useful is tape 5 which covers the room by room outline for emphasizing each type of chi treasure that is part of the bagua in one's home or office. My home has already become a more inviting and peaceful place to live!

When the Church Bell Rang Racist: The Methodist Church and the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama
Published in Hardcover by Mercer University Press (October, 1998)
Author: Donald E. Collins
Average review score:

Documents one small part of the struggle for civil rights
During a time when Alabama was a major battleground in the struggle for black civil rights, Collins describes how one white denomination responded to the moral issue of racial segregation. His story is not a pretty one. Collins paints a picture of evasion, resistance, and moral cowardice. In small towns and large cities, Methodist congregations opposed the teachings of their nation organization; ostracized ministers who dared to advocate racial equality openly; withheld funds from religious organization considered too liberal on racial issues; closed their doors to African-Americans; and refused to have any contact with black fellow Methodists. - - Paul T. Murray, Siena College

An account of the fight to end segregation
An insider's view of the struggle to end segregation in the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the UMC, Collins' book is filled with stories that were echoed throughout the deep South: personal stories of courage by ministers and laymen whose Christian idealism led them to oppose the institution of segregation in the church. Sadly, it also recounts, despite some structural and administrative advancement, the truth that Sunday morning remains the most segregated hour in American society. A must-read for those interested in the struggle between Christian faith and cultural Christianity in the deep South.

Give me a break...
Once again another worthless book. This is what one can expect when they buy a book unseen. I didn't find much of anything very useful.

Great book - easy to read - simple to do.
This book I believe is primarily aimed for those new to sys admin. Even experienced professionals would benifit though because of quite a many tidbits of valuable insight. This mainly though walks you through the many wizards providing usually more explanation that that is given by default with the OS. A new admin under my wing, has been using it and he finds that it provides confidence as he works his way through many of the tasks. Well written book with lots of pictures.

With Love, from Cynthia - A collection of recipes & remembrances
Published in Hardcover by Wimmer Companies, Inc. (13 December, 1999)
Authors: Cynthia Collins Pedregon and Cynthia Collins Pedregon the Peach Tree
Average review score:

With Love, from Cynthia
I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class from Cynthia where I purchased this book. I have cooked several of the recipes (including a meal for 20 with every recipe coming from her book) and my guests and family gave the food rave reviews. The recipes are easy and practical and don't require unusual ingredients.

In addition the book is full of suggestions for variations in recipes and multiple uses for dressings and sauces.

The best part of the book is that it really is filled with love. The personal notes, quotations, and revelations from Cynthia and her family have made this a cookbook that I use in the kitchen by day, and then take to my room to read before bed. It is a treasure I will use for years to come.

Lots of Love in Every Bite
Cynthia Collins Pedregon has written three wonderful cookbooks: The Peach Tree Tea Room, The Peach Tree Family Cookbook, and With Love, From Cynthia. Each is filled with delicious recipes and notes about the foods which make you want to prepare them, share them and eat them at once. Not only does she share recipes that you and your descendants will treasure throughout the years, but also your life will be touched by hers and you will feel you have known her forever. With Love, From Cynthia is the most transparent of the three books and the one that will make you want to travel to meet her, visit her tea room, attend her cooking classes and move in with her family. With Love, From Cynthia not only shares more of her wonderful recipes, but also communicates joy, hope and a boundless love for life.

Ya Veras!: Segundo Nivel: Student Workbook/Lab Manual

Authors: Stephen J. Collins, Douglas Morgenstern, and Gutierrez
Average review score:

stellar
This workbook goes far beyond bland exercises to enrich the classroom with exciting and creative lessons and ideas. I recommend it both for teachers and students. It would be wonderful if it were adapted for the online world.

GREAT BOOK FOR LEARNING 1st YEAR SPANISH!
I thought that the book was well thought out and had a lot of activities that help you connect to spanish and speak it well. My father has been a spanish teacher for 25 years and he says it is like a spanish savior compared to the other stuff he has seen (and he has seen a lot).

EXCELLENT BOOK!
